Quarantine regulations

Before importing goods you must find out if they fall under the control of Australian quarantine regulations.

All imported plant, animal, mineral and human products must be approved by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS).

Some products are considered a significant risk and are not allowed into Australia. Other products can only be imported if AQIS grants an import permit.

Online database

Before applying for an import permit, importers should check the status of their product on the AQIS ICON online database. The database:
  • contains import conditions on more than 20,000 plant, animal, microbial, mineral and human products
  • can save importers time and money by identifying special restrictions at an early stage
  • provides specific information on what should be included on the application form.

An application for a permit must be submitted for each product type along with the fee.

Each application is assessed on the potential risk to people and the environment. Approval is not automatically given and sometimes special conditions are imposed.
