Following changes to the Freedom of Information (FOI) process, you can now seek access to thousands of Cabinet documents from the period 1 January 1988 to 31 December 2000.
The type of documents that can be accessed
They include:
- cabinet submissions
- cabinet notes
- cabinet agendas.
This process gives greater access to cabinet documents. However, exemptions under the Freedom of Information Act include things such as personal privacy, national security, law enforcement and public safety. This may mean only part of a document being released.

Cabinet document lists
There are two different types of lists:
- for 1988 to 1991 - arranged alphabetically by subject
- for 1988 to 2000 - arranged by date.
Between 1988 and 1991, a dual system was used to record cabinet documents so you should look at both lists if you're looking for documents from this period. Personal information in these lists has been removed to protect the privacy of individuals.
