Governing councils

The governing council is a legally recognised group of people that sets future directions and goals for kindergartens and schools. It is sometimes referred to as a board.

Membership

Being a member of the council gives you a real say in what your school is doing for its students and your involvement may give your children a greater sense of belonging with the school.

Council members include parents, students and staff. In government schools, councils must have a majority of parent members.

Membership on the council is by a nomination and election process and membership is often announced at the school’s annual general meeting (AGM).

Each member generally has a set role but all members work together in the best interests of the school and school community.

Meetings

Most school councils meet about eight times a year – or two times during each school term. Meetings are set at times that are convenient for the members.

School councils operate with a signed constitution and behave in line with the code of practice.
