Become a Boat Code agent or examiner

If you are working in the marine industry, you or your business could become a Boat Code agent or examiner and be authorised to affix, record and inspect identification details on vessels.

A Boat Code agent is a person or body corporate accredited to affix Hull Identification Numbers (HINs) to vessels, validate HINs which already exist, and issue interim Boat Code certificates.

Boat Code examiner is an employee of a Boat Code agent approved to affix, record and inspect identifier details attached to a vessel.

Appointments are valid for a 12 month period.

Step 4: If your application is approved, the Boat Code Coordinator will contact you to arrange training.

Conditions of application

Boat Code applicants must:
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • supply a copy of the current Second Hand Dealer's Letter of Authority from SA Police, or provide a SA Police Clearance Certificate for the Boat Code agent (and for any nominee)
  • be prepared to complete the Boat Code training course.

A Boat Code agent's business should:

  • already be associated with the marine industry, unless the department approves otherwise
  • be open to the general public at least five and a half days per week or as agreed by the department
  • have the necessary tools and equipment, such as punches and engravers, for affixing a Hull Identification Number (HIN) to a range of specified materials
  • have access to an area suitable for accommodating a boat trailer while the HIN is being affixed to the vessel.

A Boat Code agent is responsible for:

  • making sure that the application for Boat Code (PDF 380KB) is correctly completed by the boat owner
  • accurately recording the registered owner’s details and registration number
  • confirming vessel details (eg. brand name, type, engine numbers) and measuring the vessel length
  • confirming the existence of any HIN already attached to the vessel and, if acceptable, issuing an interim Boat Code certificate
  • arranging for the marking of vessels with a HIN in accordance with Boat Code procedures
  • referring any doubtful Boat Code applications to both the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and SA Police
  • handing the relevant section of the interim Boat Code certificate to applicants
  • delivering the relevant sections of the interim Boat Code certificate and attachments to DPTI within 5 working days
  • cooperating with DPTI staff in the conduct of any Boat Code audits
  • maintaining an up-to-date copy of the Boat Code agency operating manual.
