Experience exemptions for driver's licences

In special circumstances you may be exempt from gaining the minimum driving experience requirements for a specific class of driver’s licence.

Class Heavy Combination

Applicants for a class Heavy Combination licence who do not meet the minimum driving experience requirements (i.e have not held a class Medium Rigid or a Heavy Combination for at least one year) may undertake an approved training in lieu of experience (TILE) course, provided they have held a class C driver’s licence for at least two years.

Restricted licences and other exemptions

Restricted licences may also be issued to cover the use of certain vehicles such as mobile machinery, plant and equipment which is only used within the confines of a factory, depot or industrial complex and has an unladen mass or Gross Vehicle Mass that exceeds the class of licence held by the person (provided the person has been appropriately trained in the operation of the vehicle).

Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Applications can be made by writing to:

Co-ordinator, Licence Review
Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure
Locked Bag 700
GPO Adelaide SA 5001
Fax (08) 8402 1978

Exemptions are not available for class Multi Combination.
