What is the in-service diesel emissions standard?
The standard, introduced on 1 March 2011, sets reasonable emissions limits for diesel vehicles in service. It is designed to reduce oxides of nitrogen and particulate emissions from diesel vehicles that contribute to air pollution in urban areas.
The standard is part of the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 1999 and complements the National Environment Protection (Diesel Vehicle Emissions) Measure (DNEPM).

Poorly maintained diesel vehicles use more fuel and have much higher oxides of nitrogen and particulate emissions. Exposure to this type of pollution causes a wide range of circulatory and respiratory problems that can lead to heart and lung disease and even death.
Smoke and odour from poorly maintained diesel vehicles also affects the social wellbeing of people in urban areas.

Vehicles that attend the Regency Park Vehicle Inspection Facility for a roadworthy inspection may also be required to undergo an emissions test.
Vehicles that blow visible smoke are more likely to be required to undergo an emissions test.
The roadworthy inspector will let you know if you need to return for an emissions test in the Vehicle Emissions Test Facility.

An emissions test needs to be booked in advance by phoning the test facility on 1300 556 916. The test takes approximately 60 minutes to complete.
If you need a roadworthy inspection, this must be booked separately.

What is the cost?
Vehicle inspections and emissions tests are subject to fees. For more information on fees, phone the test facility on 1300 556 916.

If your vehicle fails an emissions test you may be issued with a defect notice. If your vehicle is defected, you need to return it to the test facility for another test and pass before the defect notice is removed.
To reduce your chances of being defected it's recommended the vehicle is serviced and repaired prior to an emissions test.

A vehicle that's well maintained should comply with the new standard.
It is recommended you regularly service your vehicle in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines to comply with the emissions standard.
Well maintained vehicles also consume less fuel - meaning greater cost savings for you.
